Latest News from the Central Chilterns Forum
Following the recent Community Forums at Wendover and Great Missenden, a picture is beginning to emerge of the likely impact of HS2 construction on the AoNB. As shown on the map, there will be construction compounds and bridge works throughout the AoNB, starting from the tunnel exit at Mantles Wood, and continuing to Rocky Lane and beyond. Of greatest concern to local residents will be construction of the 'Green' ( cut and cover ) tunnel under the B485 at South Heath.
HS2 Ltd distributed a list of works, and detailed maps, which can be found on our Forum Documents page. These show the routes to be used to access the construction sites, and the proposed diversions of roads and footpaths which will be required. Access to the South Heath tunnel is shown via the B485 down to the A413, rather than through Church Street and Chesham, as was recently suggested - possibly as a result of representations made at a bilateral meeting with HS2, organised by the Chesham Society.
However, the situation for Chesham remains grave, even without HS2 construction traffic being routed directly through the town. Clearly the planned construction will cause delays and congeestion on the A413 and B485, resulting in displacement of existing commuter traffic onto whatever alternative routes are available - much of which will arrive in Chesham via Chartridge Lane. Traffic management questions will ultimately be decided by HS2 and Bucks CC, but preliminary work is taking place now, in the Community Forums.
To date, Chesham has had limited representation at the Forums, and lacks an action group to make the best case for the Town. If you may be able to help in any way - see this page or contact us directly.
